I’m very much one of those “gonna do” people. I’m “gonna do” this and “gonna do” that… when I find the time, of course. Unfortunately, the things I’m “gonna do” seemingly have no end and that time I’m always waiting on remains as elusive as ever! Hubby actually calls me “Gonna Lewis” (yeah, he’s a sarcastic bastard, but I still adore him).
A bit of time off work recently did lead me to get some things done this week. Monday I cleaned the oven. Tuesday I cleaned out the fridge. Wednesday I started on kitchen cupboards. Today I finished up with a complete pantry overhaul.
In all my rummaging about the kitchen, I came across the entire cupboard dedicated to the cookbooks I could never bare to part with. Funnily enough, though, I could count on my fingers how many recipes I have actually made from all of them combined. Testing out new recipes from these books would be one of those things I’m “gonna do” (one day… when I find the time).
Symply Too Good to be True
I’ve had a few of Annette Sym’s Symply Too Good To Be True Recipe Books ever since they first hit the shelves in the early 2000’s. I own books 1 though 5. I see they have a new look now and she had added a book 6 and 7 since I originally purchased mine all those years ago.
They’ve been lost and found about the house a few times between moves and spring cleans but I always seem to come back to them when I’m feeling motivated to make a better effort in the kitchen. A couple of her recipes have made their way into our family’s favourites – I know the Beef Tortilla Stack so well, I haven’t needed the recipe for over a decade! There are a handful of others I’ve made fairly regularly over the years but, truth be told, I have actually bothered to make very few of the dishes… I tend to just look at them longingly and plan to make them. One day.
I dug out Annette’s books the other day while having a clean up of the kitchen and carefully went through each of them. I’ve made a list of 40 recipes from books 1 – 5 I would like to try and, by gosh, I’m just “gonna” do it!
Now is as good a time as any because there is never going to be a good time for me to do something. There is always going to be work and family and health and all the rest going on. That’s just life.
In the meantime, I’m finding us shopping day-by-day after work more and more (not a budget friendly way to approach things), or falling back on takeout (not tasty, nutritious or cost-effective) and my waistline is most definitely expanding as a result of grabbing ‘whatever’ in an exhausted hurry. Time to get organised again and put some thought into what we’re feeding our family.
I need to get back into the habit of meal planning (and shopping accordingly), cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients and being aware of portion control.
I need to add more vegetables to our diet (I have to grate them into things for me as much as the kids… I hate them myself) and retrain away my sweet tooth. I’ve done it before so I know I can do it again.
Experience has taught me that accountability goes a long way towards achieving your goals. For that reason, I’ve posted on the Symply Too Good to be True Facebook Page that I plan to tackle 40 recipes over the next few months. I will hold myself accountable by keeping track of each effort on the blog here. This will also be good for me to refer back to to see which ones I especially liked and which ones I’d perhaps not make again.
